When I was in the 13 years old, my affection for anything related to mermaids bordered on obsessive. As fate would have it that year my family was moving overseas and about to board a very long flight when this book's cover art caught my eye on the spinning rack of paperbacks in the airport convenience store. I begged my mother to let me purchase a copy with my spending money. Aboard that plane, I began what would develop into a lifelong love and reverence for the story, the characters and the themes in this exceptional book. I cannot even count the number of times I have read it.. and to this day I draw lessons and analogies from it... today this text holds an esteem for me that is almost spiritual.

It has been over 30 years since that fateful afternoon in an airport and in th at spam of years there has never been a time I did not own at least one copy of this book. Today I own two copies: my personal copy, one of my most precious possessions and a copy to loan to friends. Over the years and still today I have so often quoted/referenced this book in my day to day life that, I'd for no reason than to understand what I'm even talking about (lol), nearly every person I care deeply about has had to read it, as well----and i have never known anyone to be anything less than enthralled.

I loved everything about this book. There are very few books I choose to read more than once. I read it first in the early ninties. When I moved back home I lost the book. Several years ago I started searching for a copy again and when I found it I devoured the book yet again.

I was dissappointed to find out that the author passed away before she finished the sequel. Her talents will be sorely missed.
I highly recommend this well-written and engaging book to anyone interested in intelligent undersea life. The characters are true-to-life and it is easy to like and dislike them. Inclusion of split-tailed mers is a particularly nice touch, since they are well-known in Europe (check out The Mermaid of Denmark out in the Bay!) but seem to have been forgotten by American artists and writers. She's got romance, secrets from the past, political corruption, civil war, and the potential destruction of the oceans! Thoroughly enjoyable.
Unfortunately, this book has been out of print for a long time and it is difficult to obtain a reasonably priced used copy. It would be nice if the publisher decided to reprint this wonderful book, as there are many people out there who would appreciate it and others like me who already appreciate it and would like to be able to pop down to the bookstore and pick it up for birthdays!
I first read this in my senior year of high school twenty years ago and fell in love with the underwater world Van Gores created. Much later, with the advent of the internet and online shopping I searched to get my own copy and was lucky enough to get one from a used book store. They’re now $50+.

I searched endlessly for more books from this author and was devastated to learn she passed away. My thoughts are with her family and I hope they know how talented a writer she was. This book still resonates with me twenty years later and is still on my top ten list of favorite books. I have yet to find another mermaid book that even comes close to this one for world building, dynamic characters, intricate plot and overall storytelling.
This is quite simply one of the best books I have ever read. Very well written, great character development, and if you like mermaids then this book is a MUST for your collection.
The most perfect mermaid book I have evwr read, despite the main character being overly whiney and self pitying the entire time.

But she does NOT have sex with a dolphin. I've seen so many reviews that state this and it is false. Don't be put off because of that.
I accidentaly stumbled across this book while searching through endless pages of books, here on . I am so glad that I did. I've always been fascinated by mermaids and have been building my own collection of mermaid books. This is the best mermaid novel that I've read. I'm sure that this will become one of my all time favorite books.
While most mermaid stories are set in our human world, this tale takes place entirely in the realm of the mer, which makes it particularly interesting. The story is centered on one mermaid's struggles to uncover the truth of her lost heritage and to claim her rightful place in the sea. It is a beautiful and well written story. I highly recommend it as a must read for mermaid enthusiasts. Other books that I recommend

Absolutely wonderful story with a strong female lead who takes you on an adventure. Romance, science fiction and fantasy. The world building was fantastic who would want to miss out on such a great book. The characters had such depth and the interaction was fantastic. This story was truly breathtaking. I highly recommend this book. I really wish they would convert to e-book version. My paperback book is getting worn from all my rereading lol. Truly a one of a kind author.
