Aspects of this story strongly put me in mind of the movie "Wanted" with assassins and conspiracies mixed with some random mobster and sci fi movies. Having a male main character was a nice change.Although this was a pleasant read, it just was not a great read, either. I think the biggest problem was that the relationship of the hero/heroine was integral to the story --- the reason why he turns away from his extended family and everything he believes in --- but so grossly underwhelming.
I can understand the hero is young, confused about his feelings, and conflicted about his loyalties. That said, somehow the delivery of all that just did not make for a great romance. The end result is a sort of half-hearted, wishy-washy path to love. Not really something that sweeps you along for an exciting ride and makes you feel true love can conquer assassins, conspiracies, mobsters and monsters alike.
Also, there was no real basis for their relationship other than the eye candy variety. Our hero is kicka** and can hold his own against authority figures and monster hordes. What makes the heroine special other than being a popular assassin target and monster magnet to move the story along? While she may have had some latent skills which were never utilized (totally wasted opportunity by the author), other than her often displayed powers of helplessness and unsettling mood swings, she had nothing to distinguish her from the next pretty but crazy blonde. The one time they hit the sack, her motivation is trying to find someone to save her from her crappy existence (what appears to be the beginnings of an unhealthy pattern for her, really) and I can only imagine his motivation is that he is a young male and hasn't had female company for a while. This just had so much potential and, obviously, I was disappointed that it failed to deliver.
Like all e-books these days, an editor would greatly improve the reading experience and lower my annoyance factor by fixing the grammar/spelling/malaprop errors but I was able to finish the story.

I put this book on my to-read list at the beginning of the summer, and after I read the synopsis I knew it was one of those books that I just had to get my hands on. A huge part of what made me pick up this book is that it was about a secret organization that eliminates Hybrids, a threat to humanity. Another thing that caught my attention was that it was written in a male's PoV. Most books that I read are from a female PoV, so it's nice to have a change every now and then. So I ordered it, and needless to say, I was ecstatic when it arrived in the mail. I cracked it open right away!
After having read the book, I had to let my thoughts marinate over night, but I quickly came to the conclusion that I loved the book...with a few exceptions.
What I liked about the book
The plot Mediocre, but I still enjoyed it. A fast read and easy to understand. There wasn't an overload of action scenes or mushy gushy romance. And thank goodness!
Characters
Right way you get a sense of what type of person Vasi is, serious, confident, and loyal. He believes in what he does, ridding the world of Hybrids, with an almost comical conviction. Vasi also has a sense of morals. He doesn't protect humans from Hybrids because the government compensates The Syndicate for their work, he does it because it's the right thing to do.
Rosie, Vasi's sister, was not at all annoying, which I honestly half expected her to be. She had Vasi's back through everything, and she didn't go through the whole I-told-you-so's- when things went wrong. She was a very supportive character.
I liked Riley, because she had her moments when she freaked out, but they were normal for a character going through her situation. Even knowing she had a hit on her didn't cause her to break. She spazzed a little, cried a few tears, and moved on. Though she felt a need to be protected, she wasn't the clingy whinny sort of character that spent most of their time in denial.
I also loved the interaction between characters, especially Vasi and Riley. They were an awkward couple, but I liked them because though they were attracted to each other, their interaction wasn't completely driven by hormones. Again, thank goodness. If I had to sit through a whole book of them gazing longingly into each others eyes and groping each other, I would've lost it!
What I didn't like
Predictability Do I really need to explain further?
The antagonist I won't drop the name of the main antagonist, because I don't do spoilers, but I will say that he wasn't diabolical enough for me. I wanted him, needed him to be more layered and complicated, but he fell short of my villain expectation. Also, I was able to pinpoint his role way too soon in the book.
Another thing, what the heck is a Hybrid? I never figured that out even after the poor excuse of a background. I initially thought they were some breed of vampire, but that wasn't it either, so I'm pretty much still confused.
The church scene I'm not going to go into to details, and I don't have anything against church, but this particular scene could've been left out on account that it did nothing to push the story forward.
Conclusion Despite the few mentioned things that I didn't like, this book is still a really good read. But now that I think about it, this book puts me in the mind frame of those tv shows geared for teens. Hmm....anyway, for me this was a great book. Not awesome but good enough for me to read it almost straight through. Would I recommend it? Yes, though it may not be everyone's taste.

I loved the book! Fast paced and kept you engaged the entire time.
My blogging partner and I thought this book was good. Shelena Shorts took a gamble and created a new paranormal universe with The Syndicate. It did have a slow start but Ms. Shorts has to build up the backstory and the characters. Compelling story about Vasci, a (hunky) younger member of the Syndicate (a mix between the mafia, FBI, and the Volturi) whose only job is to routinely assassinate Hybrids. Way cool and fresh idea with plenty of action and a bit of romance, too. Loved it!
This book was fenomenal to start off. The plot was fast and the love story was original. It starts with Vasi a boy who is part of the Syndicate and kills monsters called Hybrids. He is ordered to kill Riley but is shocked when he realizes that Riley is a girl. Immediately he is drawn in to her and the weird relationship they start to build. Riley tells Vasi about her strange dreams about the monsters (Hybrids) and Vasi starts to protect her. Of course the book continues but I'm all about letting one read it for themselves. Truly it was a great book and I read it in one sitting.the thing that makes it so great is its the complete opposite from The Pace series and only truly wonderful authors can start fresh and create a new series that's completely different. So people ... read it! It's one summer read you don't want to miss.
