It's a pretty young Y/A book with an interesting story line. Heroine falls for younger guy... under age, (why couldn't he have been 18 instead of 17? And she is a first year teacher.? ) Why the 2 star rating?... well, it was deceptive. This book, quite literally, was basically torn in half. The story leads you into the story, then just stops. You must buy the second book... There is no conclusion in book 1. The fact that my kindle told me that there was suppose to be 412 pages in the novel. I must have been speed reading-NOT, to come to the end of "book 1" so quickly. In fact the second book just starts on the very next sentence or chapter. So, unless you are prepared to BUY the second book, don't start the first.

Shadow of Time Jen Minkman 9781480242234 Books Reviews

I have to say, this was not what I expected when I picked up the book, and even my first impression did not quite prepare me for the book.

Hannah is back at her parents' log cabin for her summer break from teaching, and her and her brother Ben have the place all to themselves. But her time off is anything but relaxing. Seeing her brother's childhood friend, Josh, all grown up puts her in a tizzy. He's handsome, sensitive, and has earned a special place among his Navajo people, but he's burdened and distant at times, which throws her off. On top of it, she's having nightmares that feel real about an ancient time, in which she's an integral player, and she's being harassed by different people. It's a summer full of so much promise -- if she can get past all the hurtles in her way.

So, for my expectations. I frequently get books but can't read them right away, so when I looked at the cover (which I did both when I purchased the book and before I read it), I was surprised by the Native American theme in a very fantasy type cover. But it's pretty, so in that respect I suppose it's working.

I started reading, and the writing was decent, but it smacked of a first book, which made me nervous. I almost gave up at that point, but I decided to give it a little more time. The Navajo setting had me hooked, and I'm so glad.

The romance is very hot and cold. Hannah doesn't quite seem like a 21 year old, so her falling for a "more mature" 17 year old doesn't seem too far off base. Hannah definitely looses sight of the age difference as the book progresses, but we get gentle reminders from the author, which was a nice touch. (I think at one point it said the age difference is 6 years, but it's only 4 years, and from the sounds of it, not quite that.) The author did a great job with pulling the emotional strings with the romance.

I was a bit bummed about the ending though. It ends on a pretty dramatic note - not necessarily a cliff-hanger, but definitely not a comfortable close. So I suppose I'll have to put the next book on my reading list to get my resolution, but overall, not a bad book.

I can't vouch for the Native American bits, since I'm admittedly ignorant, but they felt authentic. There was a lot of nice detailing, and quite a few Native American words and such. I hope to add more Native American stories to my library, so this was a fun start.
Ever since the very first pages, I felt incredibly hooked by the story. I usually know right from the beggining if I like a book or not, and it seems that I was right this time too.

Hannah is a lovable character right from the start, with her shyness, sense of humour and insecureness. She is very dedicated in everything she does, and will not back out when it comes to the people she loves, even if she is in mortal danger. Throughout the book, I could relate to most of what she was experiencing, but I felt a little bit annoyed when she was crying like a baby because of Josh. However, I also think that this would have been the case for any of us women if we had had to go through a situation like hers. I could tell from very early on that there was something more to Josh than met the eye. And it's such a pity I can't tell you how amazing it was when I discovered exactly what. I would spoil the book for you if I did. His connection to Hannah is very clear, not only to them, but also to the people around them. It literally made me mumble "you idiot!" anytime Josh was afraid of getting involved into a serious relationship with her. I loved him at the beggining, hated him and ended up loving him a lot more when I found out about his motives.

My favourite parts were definitely the ones where the Dinè's way of life was detailed. From the way they think and eat, to the way they act and talk. Jen documented herself very well and it is amazing to what extent she managed to describe everything, especially when you find out that she has never been to America, let alone Navajo Nation! When I got to the half of the book, I felt that everything was happening too slowly, but then there were two chapters about what happened in the past, and everything began to make so much sense, it was actually incredible how everything was connected, how every single detail had a purpose and a meaning behind it.

Honestly, I would have loved to find out more about the past. It was so intriguing to learn about the Navajo history and language, their traditions and the struggles they had been through to survive. At each of these two chapters' ending, I was so touched I felt like crying. Jen managed to make me very interested in the Dinè, and I will definitely read more books about them, especially nonfiction ones, as I want to learn more.

"Shadow of Time" is marked as YA Paranormal, but it is so much more than that! It is one of those books that once finished, you feel you are a better, more mature person. I recommend it to everyone, but I think it will appeal more to girls and women.
I bought this book when I found out Native Americans were a part of the story. I enjoyed how the author used real Navajo words and customs. Frankly, I thought the author must have lived in the location of this book and personally knew about this culture, so I was floored when I found out she had never been in the United States. That was awesome research! And she also converted the book from Dutch into English (and American English at that!). Very admirable.
I loved the storyline that included Hannah, Josh (the hot Native American), and Hannah's brother Ben. There were aspects of reincarnation, animal spirit guides, a wise medicine man, and skinwalkers (think of evil ghosts that can change into people or animals) that drew me in and had me hooked. There was romance, humor, horror, and history all wrapped in this book that made it a joy to read.
